the Hird Dimension:
and she's riding that stairlift to heaven Hello my darlings, well from my stairlift in heaven I've been looking down on you all, and in particular that lovely football team in red & blue. Me and Jimi Hendrix love a bit of 'knitting' of an evening and we really can't wait for Geri Halliwell to join us for a threesome. Knit one, Perl one, deary. So we thought what better way to pass our time than to follow the Knitter's football team.
There isn't that lovely, then.
Another evening welcome to the knitting lounge and with Manchester United on the telly all the glory hunters are in club Cloud#9. Terry Thomas, Sidney James, John the Baptist, Buddy Holly, Bill Owen, even Bob Hope and Bing Crosby have joined the billy big time boys of Busby and Shanks. They never lower themselves to venture as far as the knitting lounge. Anyway tonight's game was in a little known competition called the League Cup. I know me or Jimi hadn't heard of it either. Jimi did his research as usual and apparently Hinckley are normally so bad in this competition they very rarely make it past the first round. However today's game was a third round match. "Ooooh" I said to Jimi "Have Hinckley won some games then?" Apparently not, Jimi told me that Premier division clubs had been given a bye to the third round. Oh well. Tonight's opponents would be Histon from the Eastern Division. Apparently they had not lost once in the league this season and had only been beaten in the FA Cup by a Conference team. Jimi says this could be another 'banana skin' game like Gresley. I'm not sure what he meant because I've only ever seen Jimi roll up his banana skins. Mmmm, I'll have to ask one of my grandkids...
Hinckley pretty much controlled the game start to finish. Within the first 15 minutes that lovely young Neil Cartwright had made a run and a shot, and Wayne Dyer had also made space on the right then crossed for Matt Lewis to just glance his header wide. Oooh, I can see the 'Tena Lady' would be pretty full tonight, the lovely young Neil Cartwright came inside from the right again and this time his shot was savd by Paul Barber in the Histon goal. After 30 minutes we saw the best and worst in one move. Matt Lewis received the ball from a corner, he looked up and placed his shot curling around Barber only to see his shot rebound off the post. The rebound fell straight at the feet of Gavin Stone, who in true defender stylee placed the ball about 55 yards over the bar from close in. Then right on half time Matt Lewis again forced Barbour into a save seeing his shot turned away for a corner. Half time came with the scores 0-0.
Jimi's first half thoughts: Hinckley had dominated all the half and Histon had threatened little. Hinckley were creating chance after chance and it would only be a matter of time.
Hinckley were ahead within 10 minutes of the second half. Chris Smith was his usual Whippet self and his determination won the ball on the byline. He crossed it low to the far post for Matt Lewis to tap in from 55mm. Oooh, oooh, oooh the 'Tena Lady' has burst. Neil Cartwright has scored a goal! 5 minutes after the first goal, this time Dave Sadler down the right crossed in again for Matt Lewis, but with Barbour blocking him he tapped it left for Neil Cartwright to blast it into the roof of the net. Oooooooh. With the game coming to a close Chris Smith was clumsily bundled over in the area and a penalty was given. Matt Lewis stepped up to comfortably score his second and Hinckley's third. The final whistle sounded and Hinckley had a 3-0 win.
Jimi's verdict: Hinckley had controlled the game start to finish and were not really pushed at all. Wether Histon had really tried or not who knows but the only surprise on the night was that Hinckley only scored 3 goals. We must do this League Cup stuff more often.
