the Hird Dimension:
and she's riding that stairlift to heaven Hello my darlings, well from my stairlift in heaven I've been looking down on you all, and in particular that lovely football team in red & blue. Me and Jimi Hendrix love a bit of 'knitting' of an evening and we really can't wait for Geri Halliwell to join us for a threesome. Knit one, Perl one, deary. So we thought what better way to pass our time than to follow the Knitter's football team.
There isn't that lovely, then.
A quick return to the knitting lounge to watch Rugby again. After Saturday's game I thought there might be a few of the old street fighters in here, but apparently Saint Peter has introduced a dress code and none of them can get in. Just me and Jimi, obviously everyone else is in the Cloud#9 club watching the Champions League. Hinckley had brought in their main strikers, Dave Sadler and Scott Voice, for this replay, which meant that goalkeeping hero Justin Jenkins would start on the substitute's bench, not even in goal! Tommy Whittle was also still in goal and hopefully he would keep his head this time. Jimi told me Rugby showed their intentions by playing three up front, including that very nasty Rob Beard.
Rugby, as was expected from the line up, charged forward from the kick off. Dave Pearson saw his shot saved by Whittle and the very nasty Rob Beard had a shot charged down by the very lovely young Neil Cartwright. Justin Marsden also saw a shot drift wide as Rugby had the upper hand for the opening 15-20 minutes. Hinckley began to get chances and Scott Voice made Jason Pearcey save low to his left and a Shaun Murray free kick was pushed over the bar. After all Rugby's possesion it was Hinckley who took the lead. Murray crossed the ball from the left and Scott Voice selfishly headed it down into the path of Wayne Dyer who slotted it home. The lead lasted less than a minute though, Marsden had loads of time and space on the left and his fierce low cross was deflected into his own goal by Stuart Storer. This fired up Rugby and soon after they took the lead. A great run on the right by Marsden saw him go past two sloppy defenders and lay the ball in for the very nasty Rob Beard. Beard turned and shot and Rugby had the lead. Again the lead lasted less than a minute, the very lovely young Neil Cartwright made a run in from the right and crossed into Jamie Lenton who sweeped the ball past Pearcey into the bottom left corner of the net for the equaliser. A moment of madness then handed the match to Hinckley. Jason Pearcey had gathered up a through ball safely into his arms when he kicked out at Dave Sadler who was following up, but not challenging the keeper. The referee awarded the penalty and Pearcey found himself lucky to get only a yellow card and not red. Jimi said the only reason he was still on the pitch was that it wasn't actually a goal scoring chance. Jamie Lenton scored the penalty and Hinckley were ahead again. Hinckley now began to put some authority into the game and Shaun Murray had a great shot from 25 yards just go wide before half time. Still Rugby could've equalised before the whistle. A shot came crashing off the bar and the very nasty Rob Beard followed up with a close range shot that Tommy Whittle excellently saved at his near post. The half time whistle ended a fast and furious half with Hinckley leading 3-2. Jimi's thoughts were that Hinckley had struggled to cope with Rugby's three forwards and had took them half an hour to sort it out at the back. Even so Hinckley were still producing the chances and beggining to get control of the match.
The second half was a different matter altogether. This time Hinckley charged forward. Dave Sadler turned and shot from a corner and the ball beat Pearcey but rebounded off the inside off the post. Jamie Lenton's inswinging corner was heading for the far corner until Pearcey tipped it away. Wayne Dyer had a shot from 20 yards that was swerving all over the place and Pearcey did really well to get a hand to it. Lenton and Murray combined well to give Sadler a through ball into the area. Sadler rifled the ball towards the goal and with Pearcey again beaten the ball deflected wide off the outside of the post. The lovely young Neil Cartwright saw his free kick clear the wall but also clip the bar and go over. Substitute Justin Jenkins found himself in a one on one with Pearcey, and again the Rugby keeper kept them in it. After all these chances Rugby might have got another equaliser. Sloppy defending from a corner allowed Gary Redgate a free header which he wasted. The final whistle sounded.
Final score was Hinckley 3 - 2 Rugby
Jimi's second half thoughts: Hinckley had completely dominated the second half. Once they had adapted to Rugby's attacking tactics they bossed the game and created numerous chances which really should have been scored. However, Rugby put up a good fight and were never going to roll over. Hinckley had gone through to the next round and that's all that is ultimately required from these matches.
