Hello my darlings, well from my stairlift in heaven I've been looking down on
you all, and in particular that lovely football team in red & blue. Me and
Jimi Hendrix love a bit of 'knitting' of an evening and we really can't wait for
Geri Halliwell to join us for a threesome. Knit one, Perl one, deary. So we
thought what better way to pass our time than to follow the Knitter's football
team.
There isn't that lovely, then. |
Oh, my, my, my, aren't those Stafford players big fellows. Especially that 70's
Hannah Barbera cartoon icon that plays up front Hair Bear Goodman I think is his
name. Jimi tells me he used to be a football player, for the Wolfs apparently.
Hinckley were showing off their new loan signing Matt Lewis from the Harriers,
though why Hinckley would sign a sprinter from an athletics club I don't know?
The game started slowly with both sides filling the midfield. The ominous signs
for Hinckley was that Stafford were going to push forward in numbers. This early
on in the game however Hinckley were able to get round the back. Neil Cartwright
had already seen a cross wasted from the right, but on 16 minutes Jamie Lenton
got the ball in the left corner and after persevering twisting left and right he
managed to get in a cross which the keeper should have got easily. Ryan Price
in the Stafford goal was inexplicabley rooted to the spot and Justin Jenkins and
Leon (Ko)Jackson both went for the header. KoJack was given the final touch and
Hinckley were 1-0 ahead. From then on in it was all Stafford for the remainder
of the half. A Hair Bear Goodman header clipped the top of the crossbar, Tommy
Whittle saved well and held Rob Heath's shot and Daniel Davidson was also unlucky
when he too hit the woodwork. The half time whistle went and Hinckley were glad
to recoup with a 1-0 lead. Jimi was of the opinion that Hinckley seemed to be
the 'away' team trying to soak up the pressure and get a break away goal. As it
was they were doing all they could just to soak up the pressure.
Starting the second half Hinckley could have and should have been 2-0 up. After
more good work from that lovely young Neil Cartwright (someone must've told him
Nigel Clough was watching!) a cross came in and Leon (Ko)Jackson's header went
over from 8 yards out. Then like the first half it was all Stafford. Graig
McAughtrie was stopped by Andy Penny and Hair Bear Goodman was again just over
with a header. The inevitable was coming closer and in the 69th minute Hair Bear
got his 70's bubble perm onto the end of a corner and, although Tommy got his
hand to it, Goodman gained Stafford an equalising goal. This stung Hinckley and
straight away Matt Lewis had a 20 yard shot that Ryan Price tipped away for a
corner. From the corner Neil Cartwright got the ball on the right, cut inside
and had a shot from 25 yards out, that Price managed to hold on to. Both sides
could've had chances to win it from then on. A very, very offside Daniel Davidson
was clear through on goal but shanked his shot way wide, Jimi had a chuckle at
that one, and Graig Wilding's shot was saved by Tommy. Hinckley nearly won it in
bizarre circumstances. Right at the end of the game Mick Lyons had a shot from
outside the area and Matt Lewis trying to get out of the way actually deflected
the ball to the opposite side of the goal. Ryan Price helplessly watched as the
ball just drifted wide of the post. The final whistle went and a 1-1 draw was
the result
Jimi's opinion was that Hinckley had done well to contain a team that was better
than themselves. Stafford were strong, quick and attacked in numbers. He regards
this as a point gained, which he is sure Stafford's position at the end of the
season will no doubt reflect. |
