the Hird Dimension:
and she's riding that stairlift to heaven Hello my darlings, well from my stairlift in heaven I've been looking down on you all, and in particular that lovely football team in red & blue. Me and Jimi Hendrix love a bit of 'knitting' of an evening and we really can't wait for Geri Halliwell to join us for a threesome. Knit one, Perl one, deary. So we thought what better way to pass our time than to follow the Knitter's football team.
There isn't that lovely, then.
Well, well my lovelies, with the season of goodwill in full swing Hinckley made their last trip down south to the Ladysmead. Jimi told me that Hinckley had played Tiverton every year they'd been in the Dr Marten's League. Tiverton had been runners up when Hinckley won the Western division championship, and despite the two clubs not being close there was still a great rivalry between them. Jimi also said Hinckley do not travel well to Tiverton and even though the Tiverton team was very weakened they would still be very hard to beat.
It didn't seem so when the game kicked off. Jamie Lenton saw his swinging corner cleared off the line and the lovely young Neil Cartwright had a low shot saved. Luckily I had 'max strength Tena Lady' so when the lovely young Neil Cartwright had another shot blocked, it did it's job. Tiverton then began to get in the game. A Tiverton cross was deflected by Gavin Stone and Tommy Whittle made an excellent save to prevent an own goal. However, he could not do much to prevent Tiverton's opening goal. Jamie Mudge had the ball on the edge of the area and with the defence backing off he fired in a swerving shot that Whittle touched but only onto the underside of the cross bar and into the net. Ooooh 'Tena Lady' time, Neil Cartwright nearly went straight up the other end and equalised from the kick off, but he shot over. Half time came with Tiverton one goal up.
Jimi's thought's of the first half: Hinckley had done plenty of running but had failed to make the final ball count. Tiverton had scored against the run of play but were getting stronger and stronger since the goal.
The first minute of the second half killed the game. A Tiverton free kick was lofted into the area and after very hesitant defending David Steele was allowed to bundle the ball home from close in for Tiverton's second goal. Tiverton now had all the running and the gam was over on the hour. Jamie Mudge found himself with the ball after another defencive mistake and he calmly slotted the ball past Whittle for number three. Oh dear it looks like it would be another wasted journey to Devon for Hinckley, but it would get even worse. Brad Piercewright tackled Rob Cousins late and high and caught his shin pads badly. Tiverton then showed the attitude we've all come to know over the years as the entire team plus the manager ran from all corners of the pitch to surround the referee. Honestly, they wonder why they have the reputation they do. Piercewright received the red card for his crude challenge and the final whistle went.
Jimi's overall thought's: The second goal meant Hinckley were always going to be chasing the game and were left stranded going forward for Tiverton's third. After that Hinckley were really just going through the motions and didn't recapture the attitude of the first half. Overall Tiverton had shown more desire to win and had more strength on the day.
