The squad for the 2009-2010 season is beginning to take shape at Hinckley United.
Dean Thomas has signed midfielder Dan Dillion from Team Bath as the University club
resign from the Conference South. The ex-Carlise United player had been at the club
for two seasons, while he was studying Sports Performance, playing over 70 games for
the University team.
Five key players have also committed themselves for next season. Andy Hall and Andy
Gooding both signed one year contracts while Connor Franklin, Chris Mackenzie and
Richard Lavery have all agreed to sign a contract with the club again, after meetings
this week. The five are joined by striker Adam Webster who still has a year to run
on his current deal. Nick Pollard, Leigh Platnauer, Alex Taylor and Neil Cartwright
have also agreed to come back to the club.
The club have lost three players from last season's squad. Callum Lloyd and Craig
McIlwain have been released by the club and McIlwain has since joined Brackley Town.
Last season's Supporter's and Managers Player of the Season, Dominic Roma, has transfered
to Alfreton Town. The transfer, for an undisclosed fee, came about after Roma cited
problems with travelling due to his work commitments with Sheffield Wednesday where
he is an Academy coach. The right back, who used to share travelling duties to Hinckley
with Callum Lloyd, was keen to move to a club closer to his home.
Hinckley United manager Dean Thomas said: "Dominic is probably the best right back
in the league and I am loathed to lose him, but it was getting difficult for him
to travel to training twice a week and matches – especially if he is on his own. Due
to his age, we could have kept him against his will but that is not beneficial to
anyone. Alfreton came in and my chairman and theirs agreed a fee and we have to move
on. I would like to wish him all the best because he has been a good servant to the
club."
Dean Thomas is hoping to sign an experienced centre half this weekend and has invited
a number of trialists to come to the club for pre-season training. Talks have also
been held with Leicester City about bringing in a number of loan players during the
season.
Thomas added: "I hope to get an experienced centre half to put pen to paper this
weekend and if we get him on board then it will be a real boost. There are a lot
of players out there who are still available and they are having to be realistic
about their demands this season. You have to remember that two of our key players
from last season, Andy Gooding and Andy Hall, both came along in pre season, so you
never know what we may discover then. I'm also hoping to link up closely with Leicester
City and bring in some of their younger players on loan deals and we have other irons
in the fire. Whoever signs for us this season will know what we expect in terms of
passion and commitment for Hinckley United Football Club."
Off the pitch, former Knitters defender Michael Love has linked up with the club
again to assist Steve Cook with the youth team and bring closer links for player
progression within the ranks.
